faq
Will the engine operate at higher temperatures than before?
No, the engine coolant temperature is controlled thermostatically.
Is Chiptuning detectable during an inspection?
No, the software modification cannot be determined because the stock program is used to develop the upgrade.
Do I need stronger suspension or brakes?
No.
What about fuel consumption?
Because chip tuning increases engine torque, less throttle is required to achieve the same speed. Average fuel economy is improved by 0.5L/100km in most cases. On turbo diesel cars, economy is improved further especially at motorway speeds when the engine is turning at lower rpm.
Will the lifespan of my engine be affected?
The tuned upgrades are proven and thoroughly tested for each car’s individual strengths and weaknesses. All performance increases we make are well within the engine’s safety parameters.
How does the installation take place?
Using the best chip tuning tools available means we can remotely reflash your ECU via the diagnostics port with most cars. All cars are checked for faults before and after tuning and the vehicle is taken for a test drive to ensure all is up to specification (where possible).
Why not chip tuning by the manufacturer?
Car manufacturers use a stock tune that is restricted by laws imposed on new cars, meaning they have to adhere to incredibly stringent emissions regulations. Additionally, each new car built is designed to work with the varying fuel quality available around the world. These restrictions negate engine performance and can make the engine feel a bit flat, especially when compared to a chipped equivalent.
Car manufacturers have marketing targets and engine power is almost never optimised on a standard car. Some cars within a model line up will have exactly the same engine, however, the power output will be lower on the lesser model, but in fact the only difference is in the ECU software mapping.
ECU tuning boxes versus chiptuning
So called Tuning Box’s and Chip Modules trick the ECU via sensor interception and manipulation into raising the common rail, turbo pressure or pedal profile. They are a plug in and leave in device, meaning it has to remain connected to work. They’re sold under many names and some companies try to make them sound like they’re doing the same job as an ECU remap – they’re not.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR FUTURE UPDATES AT THE DEALERSHIP?
the dealer can still make any factory updates to your ECU software if required (such as a global safety recall or similar).
CAN MY ECU BE PUT BACK TO FACTORY SETTINGS?
Yes, it’s an easy task. We take a full backup of your factory engine control firmware, so we can also revert it back to factory on request.
DOES MY CAR NEED TO BE RUN ON A DYNO?
Although our tuning is developed on a dyno, we do not dyno tune every car we remap. It is unnecessary, especially with Stage 1 tuning. We like to use a dyno to develop new tuning as well as chip tuning cars that have had extensive modifications that require starting from scratch. We do however, check Lambda on all cars after we’ve chip tuned them to make sure AFR is as prescribed.
Safe power increases from tuning the latest torque request ECUs requires an in depth knowledge of map locations and torque limiters. This is of greater importance than dyno tuning – running the car on the dyno without actually knowing where the limiters are will make no power gains.
CAN YOU TUNE MY CAR IF IT HAS EXISTING MODIFICATIONS?
Yes, we can. Please mention what modifications have been introduced to your vehicle when you enquire.
WHAT IS ECU TUNING AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Every vehicle with an electronic injection engine (petrol or diesel) has an ECU (engine control unit), also known as the computer. This contains data that holds your vehicle settings for ignition, injection, air/fuel ratio, throttle control, torque management and much more, which were set in the factory when the car was produced. We’re able to reprogramme these settings in your ECU for better performance, power, torque and/or fuel economy – this is known as: chip tuning, remapping, ECU tuning, ECU reprogramming, ECU software upgrading.
Does this tune affects the factory warranty?
Firstly, we cannot advise on what would happen to your factory warranty if you get a tune. The vehicle purchase contract is between you and your dealership. Therefore we can only encourage you to check it with your dealership. Secondly, there must be a way to get through this because we have tons of customers constantly bringing us new UTEs, SUVs and sport cars. And finally, remapping is undetectable so regardless what information you chose to share with your dealership, only you would know it’s tuned.
Why choose XTG?
Mainly because we are tuners, not dealers. Dealers are everywhere, buying tuning files and tuning boxes from overseas and selling it to you. They represent a tradesmanship in NZ, while we represent workmanship. To have real tuners onboard working on your vehicle only benefits you the customer, not the tuning companies. This is why it is important to choose a tuner who can customise the vehicle ECU firmware for you based on your requirements. There are only 3 tuners in New Zealand. One in CHCH, one in Wellington and one in Auckland. The other participants in this market only ship an off-the-shelf tuning file or ecu chip solution that is produces for the mass market, not for you.
