The 2nd gen E70 X5 was a step in the right direction after the trial of the first gen X5 – which had a slew of classic BMW issues – but this one improved much upon a winning formula. Then all you had to do was choose a beefy V8 petrol or reliable and equally beefy M57 diesel. We all know that the diesel was the way to go ? (unless you wanted noise…)

There is not much this beast can’t do. Sure we could have a debate about SUV’s in general, but as a overall package this Gen 2 X5 really had it all at the time.

Audi RS4 tuning available!

Ladies and gents, this is what we call a Legacy… No, we don’t mean the Subaru station-wagon, and we don’t mean “old and useless” either. We mean, it’s a real heritage from Audi. Only the RS4 and the RS5 has a naturally aspirated engine in the whole RS line-up. A dying breed that deserves its own monument in the hall of fame of raw power. Unfortunately in 15-20 years we’ll be left with nothing but some cherished mp3 files of V8 sounds – like those old records of steam engine noises. This 4.2 FSI V8 has been responsible for a lot of goosebumps, and grins in this past decade – it never fails to revive that 9-years-old boy that lives in every man. It’s not a surprise that it made it to the top 10 engines in 2005 and 2006. Audi knew very well that the main reason people will buy this metal alpha male is the driving experience – therefore they wisely said no to the auto option, it’s only available with a 6-gang Getrag manual trans and God it’s a great shifter; it functions as a precise rein for the beast, making sure power delivery is ready and instantly available if you need it – or you can just throw it into 4 in the city and enjoy that low-end bubbly bass. The handling is spot-on too – softer than the often overly sensitive class-mates but firm enough to encourage that lucky person holding the wheel. All-in-all this is still an amazing package that gives you a taste of that Mad Max feel on the smooth asphalts surfaces of our modern society…and for that, we thank you Audi!

The new Isuzu 4JJ3 engine

The bulletproof and well-known 4JJ1 engine from Isuzu was getting a bit long in the tooth, it was time for a refresh. Blocks, pistons, injection, the lot. They wanted to make sure it’s a worthy successor so they put it through a 4million+ km durability test. We think numbers speak, so let’s bring up some more numbers: 450Nm from 1600RPM, and 140KW at 3600RPM will serve future UTEs and commercial vehicles very well. The torque band is much wider than that of a 4JJ1 too. The bit that interests us tuners the most is the new Denso injection system that provides 25% more fuel pressure than the old one giving us much more headroom for further enhancements. The other important update is the electronically controlled Variable Geometry System (VGS) Turbocharger that was heavily revised. In terms of its efficiency, you can expect a consumptions of 7.7-8 litre on 100kms and it complies with Euro V standards even without AdBlue. We’re looking forward to seeing the new D-MAX and MU-X models with this smoother, beefier power plant.

“This is a great shape and just want to get a bit more oomph from it” Indeed the CLA (W176) platform is a stunning car, and you are right to get a tune, don’t leave those juicy gains on the table ? – I mean 300+N.m of torque on these little things is perfect for city driving and a bit of seat deepening fun.

These 1.6T engines, including the N13 from BMW and even the Polo’s are very detuned from the factory with a lot of gains available to them. Engine tech in terms of efficiency and design has come a long way that these smaller displacement options are great fun and actually pretty decent place to start in terms of your performance car/enhancement journey (side note, look at the GR 3 pot engines, crazy engineering!). Sure 2.0T is preferable, but with the 1.6T you get quite a less thirstier engine overall ?
